Messy Spirituality
I just read the book Messy Spirituality. It has been around for a little while and I heard it was really good from hank so I picked it up at the library the other day. The author actually helped run Youth Specialties I think and just died this past year.
Anyway, I just wanted to recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet. He is a good storyteller and I have to admit that I teared up in a few of the different stories of people in the book. It talks about how God loves people even when they are imperfect, which is all of us.
One of the stories he told was when he was speaking at a conference he was talking to some church leaders and in it he said that one of the most spiritual women he knew smoked and used bad language. One of the pastors called him up and was furious for him saying that and wondering how he could say or suggest that be true-that she smoked and was spiritual. He just calmly stood by what he said. Yes she did but yes she was one of the most spiritual people he knew. I thought that was a great example of how sometimes people put "spiritual people" in a box and they have to act a certain way when in reality that is just not always the case.
If anyone has read it let me know what you think.
